16 February 2013, Day 256

The Lincoln Park totem pole, taken from a speeding bus. I feel a great personal connection to this totem, carved by Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) artist Tony Hunt in 1986 to replace an earlier one that fell victim to neglect, weather, and vandalism. The Kwakwaka’wakw people were the subject and actors in In the Land of the Head-Hunters, the topic of my poor abandoned dissertation, and Tony Hunt is a descendant of George Hunt, who was instrumental in bringing a group of Kwakiutl people to the Columbian Exposition in 1893 and who also played an important role in the making of In the Land of the Head-Hunters
